CRUSH SCHOOL - Crush School Effective Teaching and Active Learning Blog

CRUSH SCHOOL

I blog on Brain-Based Learning, Metacognition, EdTech, and Social-Emotional Learning. I am the author of the Crush School Series of Books, which help students understand how their brains process information and learn. I also wrote The Power of Three: How to Simplify Your Life to Amplify Your Personal and Professional Success, but be warned that it's meant for adults who want to thrive and are comfortable with four letter words.

How To Organize Information - Infographic

Organization is key to learning effectively. Logically organized information is easier for our brain to understand, remember, and recall.

But chances are that our students don't know the 5 ways they can organize information because it isn't something taught in school. At least it wasn't when I was in.

In any case there's no reason not to teach them. In fact I believe we should. To make it easier I've created just the tool to help you show them.

Remember the acronym LATCH to recall the 5 ways to organize information.

Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, and Hierarchy.

They've been around.

The infographic below describes them in more detail.

I hope you enjoy it and use as you see fit.

How To Make Better Decisions - Infographic

Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.

How do we simplify?

How do we make better, more objective, and more informed decisions?

How do we teach our children to make better decisions?

How about applying a visual approach designed for business to life and school?

It's called the 6 Thinking Hats Approach. To follow this method, simply imagine you put one of the colored hats on and look at the problem you're faced with using that particular approach.

Check out the infographic below for a more thorough description.

How To Listen To Learn And Learn To Listen (Infographic)

Listen...

Listening, not just hearing but really listening is a skill many students need help with. Some are naturals at it. Others might be bad at it. Truth is many were never taught how to listen effectively. The listening skill affects success in school, work, and relationships. Parents should promote it. Teachers should teach it.

There are many effective listening resources out there but I recently heard the Kwik Brain Podcast on listening and Jim made it simple. In a nutshell, the key to good listening is to listen with more than your ears. Check out more information on this in the infographic below and then use it to help teens (and adults too) become better listeners. Enjoy!
