CRUSH SCHOOL

I blog on Brain-Based Learning, Metacognition, EdTech, and Social-Emotional Learning. I am the author of the Crush School Series of Books, which help students understand how their brains process information and learn. I also wrote The Power of Three: How to Simplify Your Life to Amplify Your Personal and Professional Success, but be warned that it's meant for adults who want to thrive and are comfortable with four letter words.

Universal Truth: Everyone Has At Least One Superpower

Discover Your Superpower

Hey, chances are you will not be able to fly like Super Man, be fast like Flash, or crush anything that stands in your path like the Hulk after reading this blog. However, what many of us often fail to realize about superheroes is that the attributes I described are only a small part of their overall presence. There are other, often-overlooked characteristics that superheroes share that define them. These characteristics, which I believe are more important than flying and major ass kicking strength, are well within the realm of possibility for everyone.

In fact, every human being is special in his or her own way and possesses at least one gift that is unique. It is our universal mission to discover these talents and share them with the world.

So What Is Your Superpower?

This, each one of us has to discover for himself or herself. However, there are general rules you can follow to figure out what your unique ability is. When you do, there is no denying it. You know it and you spend your entire life cultivating it, nurturing it, and using it for good.

Some Tips to Help You Along

Ask yourself the following questions every day until you have the answer:

1. What am I willing to do for love not money?

2. What am I passionate about, can work hard for, and have fun with no matter what?

3. Maybe there is something that when you do it gives you a feeling of elation, creates purpose in your existence, and brings focus to your life?

4. Look within and identify your core values. Is there anything so important that you are willing to give your life to it and for it if needed?

The answers will come when you consciously listen, observe, ask questions, problem solve, make connections, and keep your mind open to any and all possibilities. Be INTENTIONAL when doing things, look for MEANING, and most importantly: WRITE THE ANSWERS DOWN.

"To experience the presents life has to offer, you must first be present” - Darren Hardy

So, work on being present in all situations (i.e. don't be a spectator), carry a journal, and write your truths down in it or create a new note in your phone dedicated to discovering yourself and your uniqueness.

The Intended Side Effect

Here's the kicker, the truth within this Universal Truth: If you follow these rules, you will be happy and fulfilled doing what you love and serving others and you will make a great living doing it. You will be wealthy on all planes of existence: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

Life is meant to be gulped

The Key? Once you have your answers, stay within the realm of your expertise. Work hard at it. Be passionate about it. Love it. Cultivate and study it. Push yourself every day to be better at it. When obstacles arise; persist. Use it to serve others and add value to them.

But perhaps the greatest happiness and joy will come to you when you help others find their superpowers. If you're a teacher teach how to attain them. if you're a writer write about procuring them. If you're a speaker speak about achieving them.

Do it all without fail and you will develop your superpower.

Dive into life head first.

Take big gulps.

Brain Hacking 411: Making Teamwork Work

By Oskar Cymerman | @focus2achieve | BAm! Radio Network EdWords Blogger

Leaders such as a teachers, administrators, coaches, and supervisors are tasked with developing effective and efficient practices to increase the performance of the individuals they lead and their organization's prestige. While there are many practices that lead to improvement, there is one that is vital to the very survival of any group or organization: Collaboration.

Collaboration is so important that it, along with Critical Thinking, Communication, and Creativity, has been slapped with the "21st Century Skill" tag, and rightfully so as research cites effective team building and collaboration as game changers to the health and performance of organizations. Moreover, Collaboration improves Critical Thinking, Communication, and Creativity in individuals as they benefit from others' wisdom and experience, continually look for effective ways to present ideas and influence other team member's decisions, and combine their skill sets with those of others.

Efficient and effective teamwork however, is not automatic. At any level, elementary to executive, successful collaboration doesn't just happen. In fact, much like an NBA team may be built around a young up-and-coming leader, a "floor general", classroom groups or business task forces are a sum of their complementary pieces with the leader at the helm. The teacher is the floor general (or captain awesome) in his/her classroom and it is up to him/her to lead the troops into battle. And, this ain't just any battle. This is the battle for our future, the future of our kids, and the future of their children. This one's big and it must be won.

And it will be.

We will succeed not through competition and the undermining of others, but through combining and compounding our forces.

Together is the destination; Collaboration is the way. Let us take it and not stray.

Today, I give you a weapon that will aid you in successful team building. Use it well.

You Have the Power to Change the World. Use it Well. Use it Often.

Universal Truth: We All Have The Power To Change The World

Change The World

Change The World

And we do.

Have you ever heard someone say that he or she is not out to change the world? That he or she just wants to contribute in small part; make a difference? I have. I know what people mean when they say that. Such statements come out of modesty and the people making them are commendable. But they are unrealistic. While the person making such claims is humble and honest, he or she does not realize one of the truest laws of the Universe:

Every action we take changes the world.

In more ways than one.

Forever.

I cannot know if Isaac Newton thought about the full implications of what became known as Newton's Third Law of Motion that for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction. I have always struggled with such a narrow view of how objects interact with each other. I understand that Newton only focused on the forces between the two interacting objects, but it has been my experience that things and beings are so deeply interconnected that every action I take has multiple reactions.

The Ripple Effect Chain Reaction

A ripple effect occurs whenever we do something. What we do affects those around us. They react and their reactions affect those around them. Greater number of people still is affected as a result of these third party reactions. And so an unstoppable chain reaction ensues.

This phenomenon truly alters our world. This is why I believe that by their very nature people are good. If we weren't, we would have led to our own demise a long time ago. Sure, we often stumble and make mistakes. Sure there are places in the world where human rights are being violated and humans dehumanized. Most places on earth are not like that though and there are always people who work to improve the condition of those oppressed. If Edmund Burke is correct in saying that "the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing," then we must make sure that we take a stand against evil, tyranny, bigotry, racism, and any other false claims of superiority.

We must do good ourselves, help others do good, and teach our kids to do good. When we do that we truly affect positive change and feel fulfilled.

The Aliens Believe in Us

It would be oblivious not to recognize however, that some actions humans take are so heinous they send ripples that distort the order of the Universe. The media provides an extensive coverage of street crimes, school shootings, and acts of terrorism. In those instances I wish that people watching the news can turn off the tube and remember that for every one of those horrible events there are hundreds of acts of kindness, goodness, and courage being "perpetrated" by the human race.

I also wholeheartedly believe the advanced alien races observing us from far away notice that most humans mean well and that our good deeds far outweigh our transgressions. I mean, being wiped out from existence or mined for resources sounds appealing to no one.

So What Am I Saying Here?

Cornell Notes on Steroids Notebook Bundle of 12
$36.00

The Cornell Notes on Steroids Notebook is a 8.5"x11" 120-page academic notebook that contains an organizational method that improves on the Cornell Note-Taking System.

Teacher and psychologist Haim G. Ginott understood this profound world-changing power we all possess when he said “I’ve come to a frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s my personal approach that creates the climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or dehumanized.”

So make the decision to harness all of your power to do good. This is especially important if you are an educator as your actions affect tens, hundreds, even thousands of kids every day. Strive to create a positive climate around you every day. Be the instrument of inspiration to others.

Realize your power to change the world and follow this Universal Truth. When you do, your classroom, the school, and the world will be a better place.

The students and adults around you will be better.

And you will be a superhero.
